First Look: Samsung ML-1630 3:31PM, Friday 2nd November 2007
Samsung's latest mono laser printer combines style with substance, and takes up less space on your desk than you'd think possible. It measures just 122x332x375mm. In real terms, that means it's a little taller than a coffee mug, with the footprint of an open issue of Shopper.

The printer's minimalist design and black gloss finish ties in with the rest of Samsung's latest range, and it looks very smart indeed. Page counts and status indicators appear as glowing blue figures on the flawless black surface, and a concealed button lets the lid hinge up to reveal the toner cartridge.

The ML-1630

is clearly designed to be a personal printer rather than an office workhorse. It can only connect to a PC via USB, and its paper tray has a capacity of just 100 sheets. Its maximum print speed of 16ppm produces sharp text documents and it does particularly well at greyscale reproductions of documents containing a mixture of text and graphics.

Like most modern mono laser printers, the only consumable here is toner, which means that running costs should be fairly economical. However, this printer's appearance is what stands out most against its drab beige counterparts, making it ideal for anywhere where either looks or space are a key concern.

The Samsung ML-1630 is available now from £120 inc VAT, and we'll be giving it a full review in Shopper issue 240, Feb 08. There's also a Multi-Function Peripheral version, the SCX-4500, which includes a scanner/copier and is available from £210 inc VAT.
