PCs have an annoying habit of fragmenting files. This causes performance to slow down, as the computer has to piece together scattered file fragments. The usual way to deal with this problem is to wait until things get really bad and then run a lengthy defrag, but with Diskeeper you don't need to. You can set Diskeeper to run in the background and keep all your files permanently defragmented, or configure it to defrag automatically before your PC starts to deteriorate. Alternatively, you can use the information provided by Diskeeper about your PC's performance and reliability to choose when you defrag manually. This utility runs a lot quicker than Windows' built-in defrag tool. By Lisa Barber
