Fujitsu is one of the few manufacturers that still makes magneto-optical (MO) drives. The petite DynaMO 1300LT connects through a USB Hi-Speed interface, which also supplies the power so there is no need for an external power supply. The top flips open to accept a 3" 1.3GB MO disc cartridge (around £11 each), although it is compatible with discs down to 128MB.
MO drives may be secure and the discs durable - they provide more than 20 years of storage - but they are also very slow, and this drive is no exception. Our large file test returned a transfer rate of 1.96MB/s, while the small file test managed just 1.1MB/s. It took a staggering 45 minutes to write 100MB of small files, which is around 50 times slower than the Disgo USB drive (above).
It's hard to recommend this drive unless you have a specific need for MO. If you want to back up or transport large volumes of data, we recommend an external hard disk or a DVD writer.
