Product ReviewsHard disks
Western Digital's latest internal SATA hard disk has a capacity of 640GB, as it consists of two 320GB platters. We were sceptical about Western Digital's claims that this design would improve file-copying performance, but we were pleasantly surprised. The Caviar was easily one of the fastest hard disks we've ever seen when copying large files. It was especially fast when reading large files: 98.33MB/s makes it one of only three internal SATA disks we've seen to exceed 90MB/s in this test. It wasn't as record-breaking when transferring small files, but it was still fast, managing a swift 15.23MB/s overall. Our 'Also consider...' choice, Hitachi's 750GB Deskstar 7K1000, was a little faster at copying small files but couldn't keep up when transferring large files. The Caviar SE16's great performance is all the more exceptional as it costs just 10p per gigabyte. It's fantastic value. By Alan Lu SPECIFICATIONS:
