ECS N8800GTX-768MX  [Computer Shopper]
COMPANY: ECS PRICE: £370  inc VAT
RATING: ISSUE: 233  DATE: Jul 07

This high-end, Nvidia-based graphics card features a top-end GeForce 8800GTX graphics chip. We've seen this chip before, but it hasn't stopped impressing us. The new architecture ditches pixel pipelines in favour of flexible stream processors. These can perform a variety of jobs, from shaders to geometry, so the card draws any environment quickly.

The N8800GTX-768MX has 128 stream processors running

at 1.35GHz and 768MB of GDDR3 memory running at 900MHz (1.8GHz effective). These specifications make for excellent games performance, as you can see from our results. ECS's card slightly outstripped Foxconn's GeForce 8800 GTX, reviewed in Shopper February 2007. Call of Duty 2 refused to work at first, as the current Windows Vista drivers are incompatible with the game's anti-aliasing. However, forcing 4x anti-aliasing in Nvidia's control panel sorted the problem with no slowdown, even though ECS's N8800GTS-320MX (below) struggled with the same settings. Running games at high resolution was no problem, either. Turning Prey up to 1,600x1,200 caused no ill effect, and we still managed to get 66.4fps.

The N8800GTX-768MX is compatible with DirectX 10, so you'll be able to play new games when they're released. This is the fastest graphics card we've ever seen, but it is expensive. If you haven't got the budget for this, ECS's N8800GTS-320MX is much better value and is still very quick.
