Dell debuts first AMD desktops 10:41AM, Thursday 14th September 2006
Dell, the world's biggest supplier of PCs, has introduced its first AMD-powered desktop machines - the Dimension E521 and the Dimension C521 - into the UK.

Both models are being offered with a range of AMD chips including the Sempron, Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processors.

The basic difference between the machines is size. The C521 is nearly half the width of its more expandable bigger brother, the E521. The two machines are aimed at home users and small businesses and are keenly priced with machines starting at £339 with a Sempron 3400+. However, that does not include shipping and VAT.

However, for £788 including VAT and shipping, the Dell UK website is offering as a home machine an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor 5000+, Windows XP Home Edition, 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz RAM, a 320GB hard disk drive, a 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro graphics card and a Dell 19in Value flat panel monitor.

Dell needs a successful partnership with AMD following a string of bad news stories for the company, which have ranged from poor financial results to an embarrassing battery recall. Most recently, Dell has had to delay publishing its latest accounts following an investigation into the company's accounts dating back to 2002.
