AMD opens R&D Centre in Shanghai 12:44PM, Wednesday 23rd August 2006
Chip company AMD has thrown open the doors to its new Shanghai Research and Development Centre (SRDC). Located in Zhang Jiang technology complex, AMD plans to employ hundreds of staff at the facility, which will be AMD's largest system design hub outside of the US.

AMD says the Shanghai R&D Centre's engineering staff will focus on the development of successors to its mobile platforms, such as the Turion.

Shanghai will also provide an important role in the validation and testing of AMD's broad range of current and future microprocessors. Its proximity to the centre of the world's PC production in mainland China and in Taiwan, means that the company can test its new products with the motherboards and other devices produced by original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and original design manufacturers (ODM) in the region, such as Lenovo, Tongfang, Flocity, HP, IBM, Sun, Acer, Asus, BenQ, Fujitsu and others.

Although the SRDC represents a multi million dollar investment for AMD, it has a long way to go to match arch rival Intel who now has some 5,000 employees in China. Over the 20 years it has been in the People's Republic it has invested more than $1.3 billion in R&D laboratories, microprocessor assembly and testing factories.
