eBay intros Skype service and Wiki 10:58AM, Thursday 15th June 2006
Auction site eBay has unveiled the first collaborations with Skype following the $2.6 billion acquisition of the VoIP pioneer last year. eBay is also clambering aboard the 'social networking' bandwagon with two new products - eBay Blogs and the eBay Wiki. The announcements were made at the eBay Live! member conference in Las Vegas.

The wiki is intended to become a reference for eBay customers. According to eBay the wiki will allow anyone to easily publish, contribute to, and refine articles about tips and tricks, best practices, and other topics of interest to the greater eBay community.

In his speech to delegates, Bill Cobb, the CEO of eBay North America, said that the company was cracking down on international fraudsters. He told the audience that to sell in the US, international sellers will need either a verified PayPal account or have a credit card

merchant account. It is expected that eBay UK and other international sites will follow suit in the near future.

eBay will be looking to bolster the credibility of its services and PayPal in particular in the face of increasing rumours that Google is planning a PayPal like online payments service of its own known as GBuy. The auction site has felt under threat by Google for some time as the search engine has entered eBay dominated areas for both online marketplaces and VoIP telephony.

Also announced is the first test appearance of the Skype VoIP service on eBay. For certain categories eBay plans to add a 'Skype Me' button which will allow buyers and sellers to discuss items for sale. From the beginning of next week, sellers will have the option to add the button to the 'Ask a seller a question' section as an option in the 'Sell your Item' form.

Among the categories to be included with the Skype Me button are cars, GPS devices, manufacturing, cameras, beds, networking routers, property and, naturally Skype devices.
