The main Europa.eu site is now the single Internet brand and the single online entry point to all the EU institutions' and agencies' sites although their current .eu.int addresses will continue to be accessible for a transitional period of at least a year.
The European Parliament, for example, will change from europarl.eu.int to europarl.europa.eu.
'The new Web identity of the Institutions is symbolic,' said Margot Wallström, vice-president of European Commission, responsible for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy. 'The EU should focus less on .institutions but more on .Europeans. The .eu domain will make EU more visible on the Internet, also to its citizens.'
The .eu domain has been open for registrations since 7 April and has proved popular. More than 700,000 domains were registered on the first morning.
The updated domain names are listed in the press release.
