Microsoft has, as you might have expected, given the Apple-HP alliance a frosty response.
David Fester, general manager of Microsoft's Windows digital media division, told the New York Times, 'Windows is about choice, you can mix and match all of this stuff. We believe you should have the same choice when it comes to music services.' Stop laughing at the back.
Microsoft might be slightly happier about the news, reported by Connected Home, that HP and Apple will be working to add support for the Windows Media Audio (WMA) format to the iPod. Or perhaps not. WMA-playing iPods could pretty much tie up the market.
Which all leaves one question. Do we call the new players hpPods or hPods? Or even hipPods. Suggestions please.
