Web site admits Miss France 'joke' 4:48PM, Friday 27th April 2001
We all like a pretty girl, but a storm has surrounded the current Miss Universe competition that's being held in Puerto Rico. The controversy has nothing to do with butch feminists decrying the event as sexist, but rumours that the entrant from France is in fact a man.

The rumours surrounding Elodie Gossuin have been picked up by the international media, enough to cast a sizeable shadow over the Miss Universe event. But it seems that the whole shebang was a joke - a nasty, horrible joke - set up by satirical French Web site L'Examineur.

In an article dated 8 January 2001, a story appeared on the site claiming that Miss Gossiun was in fact born Nicholas Levanneur, a 27 year old transvestite dancer who had worked in cabaret in Paris. This story was enough to get the French tabloids salivating with delight. At first, Miss Gossuin, a 20 year old nursing student, laughed off the rumours, but she began to worry that the stories could seriously harm her chances in the contest.

It is no surprise that the whole world nearly fell for this story. I mean the French are famous for their masculine, hirsute, young ladies.
