Animation studio drops AMD for Intel 12:50PM, Tuesday 8th July 2008
DreamWorks Animation SKG has turned its back on its previous chip supplier AMD, in favour of fierce rival Intel.

The animated movie studio is expected to replace its 1,500 HP servers and 1,000 workstations that use AMD processors and replace them with HP systems that use Intel chips, according to the Wall Street Journal.

DreamWorks, the studio behind titles such as Shrek and Kung-Fu Panda, had agreed a three-year deal with AMD in 2005, as the chip maker sought to build strong relationships with computer-generated animation studios, according to the paper.

However, with the capabilities of two of Intel's forthcoming chips, DreamWorks decided that it could speed up computer operations, aiding its endeavour to move to 3D animation next year. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The studio will be premiering its 3D technology in its upcoming release "Monsters vs Aliens", which is expected to be screened March 2009.
