Google advised to float 10:05AM, Tuesday 26th June 2001
The founders of popular search engine Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, revealed in Sunday Business that it could be floated on the Stock Exchange.

The couple launched Google three years ago when they were students at Stanford University and have watched their creation become the leading searching engine used on the Web, handling over 100 million search requests per day.

The secret of Google's success can be attributed to the unique way that it hunts for relevant links, searching for the number of other web pages linking to a specific web page rather than the number of instances of the search term appearing on the page. Also, users are impressed by the fact that Google's homepage isn't swamped with advertising, unlike some of its competitors.

Brin and Page said that such a flotation would happen sooner rather than later if it were to happen at all. Experts believe that Google could be worth anything up to £170 million if it were made public. The founders hope the business will break even by the end of this year and forecasters believe that the company could be bringing in profits of around £35 million by 2002. The company has generated revenues with its discrete advertising policy (when was the last time you saw an advert on Google?) and its licensing of its search technology.
