BBC quits ISP business 1:26PM, Monday 21st April 2008
The BBC has announced the closure of beeb.net, the ISP run by its commercial arm, BBC Worldwide.

The service launched in the dial-up days of 1999 and peaked in 2001 with 140,000 subscribers. That number has since dwindled to fewer than 250.

Users have until 30 June to find new web, email and and hosting providers.

At one time BBC Worldwide had hoped to be a major player in the UK internet market, but has failed to cope with the emergence of triple- and quad-play packages that offer landline, mobile and TV services alongside net access.

A spokeswoman said that new internet users no longer needed the BBC.

"Beeb.net was launched in 1999 when accessing the internet was a new and different thing for people and it wanted to be a trusted guide," she said, adding that "there's no need to get help on the internet any more."

If you are one of beeb.net's few remaining customers, you can find more information in the Closure FAQs.
