Dell launches XPS One range in the UK 4:15PM, Friday 14th March 2008
The PC maker has announced it will sell the ultra-stylish red all-in-one computer in Britain, with a cut of the ticket price going to Bono's controversial AIDS charity.

Dell has confirmed it is going to bring its iconic XPS One desktop PC to the UK, and will sell it in a Product (RED) version, with a cut of the sale price going to the (RED) charity.

The XPS One went on sale in the US in November, where it has been widely praised not only for its technical specification, but also for its cutting-edge design. The computer, which is an all-in-one design with the PC integrated into a flat screen monitor, competes against the likes of Apple's iMac in both features and industrial design.

The sleek 20in PC will

come in several models starting from £999.

The standard version includes a Core 2 Duo E4500 processor running at 2.2GHz, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard disk, integrated graphics and Vista Home Premium.

A premium XPS One model under the Product (RED) charity brand will also be available, with Dell and Microsoft jointly promising to donate $80 (around £40) for each model sold to the global fund to fight AIDS.

However, the charity PC is £300 more expensive. In return, it boasts a slightly faster 2.33GHz processor, 500GB hard disk, dedicated ATi Mobility Radeon HD 2400 graphics and Windows Vista Ultimate.

Although the Dell XPS website claims you can "customise" the Product Red XPS One, buyers can't change any of the components or downgrade the operating system.

When our sister magazine PC Pro challenged Dell earlier this year on why customers were forced to buy Vista Ultimate with the charity PCs, the company bewilderingly stated: "Windows Vista Ultimate Product Red fits perfectly with the Red model of creating Red branded products with high consumer appeal. Windows Vista Ultimate Product Red combines Product Red with the best of all Windows Vista features in the most complete version available."
