Trend Micro's security suite contains a brilliant firewall and a good anti-virus scanner. Previous versions featured first-class anti-spam software, and version 14 is no exception.

The last time we tested Trend's anti-spam software it detected 95 per cent of spam but misclassified some real mail. This time, the spam and fraud filters allowed every one of our real messages through, and also correctly tagged 90 per cent of spam, bettered only by Cloudmark Desktop.

It is just as well that the default settings are so effective; as with previous versions, there is little you can change yourself. A three-position slider lets you choose between High, Medium and Low settings. You can disable the system, but it's so good you'd be mad not to use it.
