Intel Core 2 Extreme: Core 2 Extreme X6800 (Conroe)   [Computer Shopper]
COMPANY: Intel PRICE: £654(inc VAT)
RATING: ISSUE: 226  DATE: Oct 06

While the Extreme versions of Intel's 800 and 900 series Pentium 4s had faster frontside bus speeds than the standard versions, the Core 2 Extreme X6800 is the same as the Core 2 Duo E6700, but is clocked at 2.93GHz instead of 2.66GHz. It also has 4,096KB of level 2 cache.

Predictably, the Core 2 Extreme did very well in our benchmarks. It came top of every one, scoring an amazing 325 in video encoding, 213 in image editing and 245 in the multi-tasking benchmark, giving it an overall score of 233. Unlike the Core 2 Duo range, the X6800 has an unlocked processor multiplier, so you can overclock the processor without also overclocking the system memory, which is more stable. We overclocked it to 3.2GHz, which improved its overall score to 248.

Intel's Core 2 Extreme is a ridiculously fast processor that shames the competition. The only problem is its price. The Core 2 Duo E6700 is £308 cheaper and almost as fast.
