The Pentium 4 600 series is based on the same core as the Pentium 4 500 range, but it has 2MB of level 2 cache plus support for 64-bit operating systems with the EM64T instruction set. We tested the 3.0GHz Pentium 4 630. The single-core Pentium 4 630 has a fairly high clock speed, but it performed poorly in our benchmarks. It fared better than the budget dual-core Pentium D 805 and 820 in the audio-encoding and image-editing benchmarks, scoring 84 and 140, but this was slower than the Celeron D 356, which is half the price. Scores of 122 and 136 in the video-encoding and multitasking benchmarks were better, but still far off the £40- and £50-cheaper Pentium D 805 and 820, and far behind the Core 2 Duo E6300, which costs just £13 more. Intel's Pentium 4 630 has poor performance and is bizarrely expensive. You can get more power for half the price or far more for around the same outlay from other Intel processors. Sponsored Links
