LabsDVD writers
Samsung's portable Super-WriteMaster is the only drive in the group with a slot-loading mechanism. This looks smart but won't accept 3in or odd-shaped discs without the risk of damage or jamming. Powering the other portable DVD writers in the group over USB doesn't affect their performance, but Samsung warns that the SE-T084L will be limited to 4X speed when not plugged into the mains. In our tests, the Super-WriteMaster couldn't burn DVDs at faster than 3X when powered over USB and was limited to 9.64X when writing CD-R discs. Performance improved using the included mains adaptor, but it was quicker at burning DVD+R/+RW/+R DL discs than it was writing DVD-R/-RW/-R DL discs. Samsung's Super-WriteMaster SE-T084L is poor value. It's the most expensive DVD writer in our group at £100, yet is painfully slow when not plugged into the mains. LG's GSA-E50N is a far better portable DVD writer. SPECIFICATIONS:
