LG's GSA-E50L has an attractive gloss black design with a ridged underside that stops it slipping and sliding around on your desk. Like its portable counterpart, the E50N, it can create password-protected discs. Filenames can still be viewed in Windows Explorer, but it will deter casual snoopers. The GSA-E50L was the second-fastest external desktop drive in all our single-layer and double-layer DVD tests. It came close to reaching 11X in our DVD-R benchmark and was the only external burner other than Samsung's Super-WriteMaster SE-S204 to exceed 7X when writing double-layer DVDs. It's also fast at backing up files to rewritable DVDs. It was the second-fastest burner in our DVD+RW test and the third-quickest when burning DVD-RWs. The drive came a respectable third in our CD-R test, writing discs at just under 30X speed. The GSA-E50L is a fast, attractive external DVD writer, but Samsung's Super-WriteMaster SE-S204 desktop writer is even faster. SPECIFICATIONS:
