LabsDVD writers
Pioneer's DVR-212BK is one of only three internal DVD writers in this group with a SATA interface. Like the two SATA Sony drives, it doesn't come with any software at all. The DVR-212BK was the slowest burner in our CD-R test. With a speed of 23.44X, it was the only writer that couldn't exceed 25X. It fared better in our rewritable DVD tests where it was one of the fastest, writing DVD-RW discs at 5.5X and DVD+RW discs at 6.7X. Unfortunately, its performance when burning single and double-layer DVDs wasn't as impressive. It was the slowest internal burner when writing DVD+R discs. It wrote DVD-R discs at 9.6X and both types of 8.5GB DVDs at just under 6X, which, while not the slowest speeds in the group, couldn't match the fastest burners in this group. The DVR-212BK isn't a particularly fast DVD writer. If you're after a SATA drive, Sony NEC's AD-7191S is only a couple of pounds more and faster. SPECIFICATIONS:
