Camera phones stimulate digicam buys 12:00PM, Wednesday 31st August 2005
Contrary to expectations, the proliferation of camera phones has led to a rise in digital camera sales, in the US at least.

An IDC research firm survey found that, rather than replacing cameras, the new phones are introducing new users to digital photography. As a result around 30 per cent of US phone owners plan to buy a camera.

'We are a pretty traditional culture here and we identify with traditional form factors like camera, and we still use phones (primarily) for making calls,' explained Chris Chute, an industry analyst.

The number of pictures taken with phones is expected to almost double this year to 7.5 billion. The number snapped on cameras is expected to reach 40 billion from 28 billion in 2004.
