Google launches virtual world 11:49AM, Wednesday 9th July 2008
Google has launched its own online virtual world, to rival Second Life. "Lively" uses avatars and 3D graphics, encouraging users to congregate in virtual rooms.

The virtual world also allows users to play YouTube videos on their virtual TVs, and import other content such as blogs or pictures. The world already has its own facebook application and Google is planning a similar version for MySpace.

"If you enter a Lively room embedded on your favorite blog or website, you can immediately get a sense of the room creator's interests, just by looking at the furniture and environment they chose," said Niniane Wang, Google's engineering manager for Lively.

"In our user research, we've been amazed at how much more poignant it is to receive an animated hug than seeing the text [[hug]]," she added.

Developed in co-operation with Arizona State University, Lively is expected to contend with Linden Lab's Second Life which was the first online community to use avatars as well as its own currency.
