Firefox 3 a record breaker
10:50AM, Thursday 3rd July 2008
Mozilla claims its new open source browser Firefox 3 has set a new record for the most software downloads in 24 hours. Mozilla look s set to take its next step sooner than expected as reports have surfaced that Firefox 3.1 may be available to download this month.
According to the company, over eight million people downloaded the browser on the day of its launch.
Demand for the browser on its launch day had exceeded Mozilla's expectations, as reports revealed that the company's servers were unable to deal with the 14,000 people per minute downloading the browser. The traffic equated to 13 gigabits of data being transferred every second, which caused Mozilla.com to be knocked offline for almost two hours.
Competitor Microsoft, meanwhile unveiled an experimental version of its Internet Explorer 8 browser in April and, following a collapse of a deal with search engine Yahoo!, is looking to expand its presence on the Web.
