HP rumoured to split off handhelds 3:00PM, Monday 13th February 2006
Hewlett-Packard is planning to set up a separate portable device business, according to company executives cited by the Wall Street Journal. The business will be separated from its notebook computer operations to better capture growth in the handheld market.

According to the report carried by Reuters, HP has appointed one David Rothschild, formerly of Sun Microsystems, to lead the new business.

The move will revive issues surrounding HP's acquisition of Compaq back in May 2002, which involved the incorporation of the successful iPaq PDA line. The CEO of the time, Carly Fiorina staked her reputation on the value of the merger being greater than the sum of the greatly disparate parts. Fiorina left the company in February 2005, however - not in a blaze of glory - and new man Mark Hurd is seemingly making his presence felt across the company's structure.
