What's more, despite its compactness, the Xperian's performance is still impressive, with an overall 2D benchmark score of 1.52. The standard processor is a 2.66GHz Pentium 4, but the Intel 845PE-based motherboard allows you to upgrade to a 3.06GHz Hyper-Threading CPU too. It isn't easy, but you can access the interior by removing eight screws, where you'll also find a spare DIMM socket for further expansion. Sadly, the Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics aren't upgradable, but with a 3DMark2001 SE score of 6,102 in 32-bit XGA there's at least enough power for current games.

Even the connectivity is decent, with four USB 2 ports, a full-size FireWire port, 56K modem and 10/100 Ethernet included. Plus, you could add wireless connectivity through the PC Card slot, and digital camera users will like the four-in-one memory card reader, which handles SD/MMC, SmartMedia and Memory Stick.

Aside from some rough edges, the Xperian offers good value, is stylish and fast too. Furthermore, its Instant On feature makes it an ideal entertainment system for the bedroom or study. In fact, if a future model could be integrated with a larger screen it could easily take centre stage in the lounge. While PCs of the future may take many forms, the Xperian could well be the future of TV.
