Archos has a reputation for producing affordable technology, so it’s no surprise its 80 Titanium is among the cheapest tablets we've seen. What’s remarkable is that this isn’t a plasticky 7in knockoff. Instead, the 80 Titanium boasts a large, 8in display that’s both bright and colourful, and a solid chassis that feels like it’s been made to last.

The only sign of budget-cutting, outwardly at least, is the 768 x 1,024 display. Power it on and it looks instantly grainier than much of the competition. Its an IPS panel, so viewing angles are wide, but in terms of outright brightness it can’t compete with our award-winners, hitting only 320cd/m2 in our tests. Colours and contrast are good, however, and images on the 80 Titanium’s screen look a good deal more lively than some of its bugdet competitors.

The Titanium’s specification follows a similar pattern, which is to say it’s middling, but works perfectly well. For your money, you get a 1.6GHz dual-core ARM A9 processor backed up by 1GB of RAM. This arrangement performed well in our tests, coping fine with high-end games: Dead Trigger and Reckless Racing 2 barely slowed down, and Rayman Jungle Run was smoother still.

In everyday use, the OS felt just as slick, with little sign of slowdown or judder when swiping between homescreens, navigating menus and scrolling, panning and zooming around web pages. Archos has left its installation of Android 4.1.1 largely untouched, too, with only a couple of proprietary apps preinstalled.

When it comes to looks, the Titanium belies its low price tag. Its metal rear panel feels robust and looks smart, and its white bezel stands out in a Labs full of glossy black. It’s a touch heavy at 440g, and a little thick, too, at 10mm, but this ensures there’s plenty of room for a bevy of connections.

Lack of Support

I purchased a cheap Archos 80 Cobalt table at Christmas. Okay but does slow up at times and screen not ideal. The main gripe however is that after promising a Jellybean update Archos changed their minds. Therefore I would not buy from Archos again becuse of poor support.

don't ever buy anything from Archos

Don't ever buy anything from Archos, they are not a reputable company.

I bought another tablet (G9 101) a little over a year ago and it stopped working. They gave me a replacement device which after 6 months has also stopped working. They are saying it is out of warranty so they won't do anything about it (apart from offer me 25% off another purchase, as if I would buy another one after that experience). The products are terrible and don't work and the company's customer service is appalling. Avoid like the plague.
