Verdict

It's big and bold but LaCie's latest Ethernet Disk delivers only average performance and no RAID fault tolerance

Terrible LaCie Experience

I bought a 4TB Ethernet Disk in May 2011. We had endless problems with it from the start which prompted me to contact LaCie technical support within the first few hours after getting the device out of the box!

We found it almost impossible to create volumes on the device and when we did (eventually) successfully create one and then wanted to edit it, we couldn't!

I contacted support about this and was told to just create new volumes... great!

Next problem... the device died! (only \about 4 days old now!) so it had to be sent back to LaCie, at a cost of £180 (to France from the UK by currier - at my expense!)

To add insult to injury the device (after it was supposedly repaired) was returned to me with two screws rattling about inside the chassis! The screws that were missing are meant to hold the front cover on (where the rack mount screws go in, this was hanging off!) The only way to get the screws out was to break the warranty seal on the rear of the device. Well that's what I thought, I still couldn't get into it though!

I created ANOTHER support ticket with LaCie expressing my absolute disgust. This was nearly 4 weeks ago! I have had to send pictures of the packaging and the device for LaCie to 'investigate'.

I have since been told (last week) that a new device is on its way... I won't hold my breath!

Throughout this entire fiasco I have told LaCie that I need this device up and running as soon as possible, we had a project on with very tight deadlines with no storage to put the data on. This project has been seriously delayed which has not only angered me but also my customers.

A terrible experience, I will never, EVER use LaCie again!
