The benefits of 64-bit Windows are currently niche, but this release marks the first real step on the ladder.

But XP x64 is certainly no damp squib. The move to 64-bit computing is a long path and these are simply the first few steps. 64-bit XP on the desktop will be niche for the foreseeable future outside of certain vertical applications - specifically those with large memory and performance requirements. That doesn't diminish the importance of this technology or the inevitability of the switch from 32-bit to 64-bit. Fortunately, Microsoft has said that 64-bit Windows will be a free upgrade/swap for existing licence holders, so you don't even have much to lose by trying. And the more that do, the more pressure that will be brought to bear both on the application vendors and the driver writers to get their software and hardware properly supported.
