WordPerfect 9

Verdict

An application that seems chaotic but is surprisingly easy to use, with excellent interactive help and many ways of accessing its features. It's let down by outdated Internet facilities and a lack of power features.

In other areas, WordPerfect scores highly. Corel has included its own PDF output driver, allowing users to save documents to PDF without needing to buy the Acrobat package. Also, the table function may not be as intuitive as Word, but it works more like a spreadsheet, with excellent formulae functionality built in.

There's a great deal to like about WordPerfect. Little usability touches abound, such as the Thesaurus drop-down in the main toolbar, or the way you can access the functionality in so many different ways. And there's the way documents get little taskbar-style sessions in the bottom application bar, giving you the same functionality of Word 2000's abandonment of the MDI interface without actually abandoning it. But it's still not really enough. WordPerfect's Internet functionality has fallen behind, and it just can't match the power offered by Word 2000.
