SystemSuite 2000

Verdict

A decent collection of diagnostics and repair tools neatly integrated into a single interface, but it's at least two upgrades short of full Windows 2000 support.

Ontrack's Crisis Centre offers a unique set of services for retrieving lost data. A basic recovery tool with ten uses allowed will analyse your hard disk and attempt to recover data, but the full version costs extra. A remote data-recovery service is available over a modem or Internet link with an Ontrack engineer and, when you're in dire straits, Ontrack can take a dead hard disk, dismantle it in a Class 100 clean room and retrieve the data. Both of the latter services are available at an agreed fee.

If you're only interested in a Windows 95 or 98 system suite, I'd still recommend choosing between Symantec's SystemWorks 2000 Professional or McAfee Office 2000 Pro, depending on whether your needs are orientated to system backup or Internet security. Nevertheless, SystemSuite has plenty of tools to keep your system in good health and free of clutter, and is the best suite currently available for looking after your Windows 2000 system. However, Ontrack expects at least two future upgrades before Windows 2000 is fully supported, by which time the other suites may well have caught up.
