Document editing means different things to different people. Some just want to be able to edit text, while others want to create and share documents on the web. Whatever your preference, you don't have to destitute yourself in the name of lining Bill Gates' pockets or install the bloater that is OpenOffice. We've been looking at the best alternatives available.

You can't miss the much snazzier and more functional AJAX-based Web 2.0 interface of Zoho Notebook. But rather than concentrating simply on text editing, Zoho enables all sorts of different media to be collected within a single document, all editable separately.

You can drag and drop resizable text boxes around its pages, as well as video, audio, images and live web pages. Web clips update on the fly, and audio can be recorded directly onto the page.
