Dell PowerEdge T100 review

in Servers

Verdict

The T100 is a compact pedestal server and its combination of value and features makes it well worth considering.

Small offices value their peace and tranquillity, and we found the T100 to be unobtrusive during testing. Along with the processor and hard disk fans you have another in the power supply, but noise levels are so low the server is almost inaudible. Power consumption was also modest. With the OS in idle our in-line power meter reported a draw of only 73W, and with SiSoft Sandra maxing out both processor cores this rose to only 104W.

As a first server the T100 offers a flexible package that can be easily customised to suit your pocket. Remote-management features are virtually non-existent, but it supports a good selection of processors, is well-built and its low noise levels make it well suited to small office duties.

A cheap NAS solution.

Was in search of a Home office NAS solution in March 2008, and spotted the 2.2Ghz Opteron 1214 variant of the server on offer at £99 + VAT + P&P. Thought with the addition of a pair of 1TB drives and a copy of OpenSuse / Samba I'd have a great NAS / media server, which it's proven to be.

Only issue to date has been the bearings on the Power supply fan, after a year or more of continual running they started to vibrate. Not that surprising as the server ships with an Optiplex 305W psu ("C248C NH493") rather than a heavy duty server unit, but it does ship with server oriented ECC memory. Anyway a quick search found replacement 80x80x25mm 12v fan's / whole Dell psu's on a well known auction site.

One thing to note, the integrated ATI ES1000 graphics card on te AMD motherboard is 2D only, so do't expect any fancy effects if you attempt to use the server as a workstation / start KDE 4. The PCI-E x1 slot pretty much rules out the add on of a meatier graphics card.
