Tektronix Phaser 780 Plus

Verdict

An extremely high-quality but very expensive colour laser - only for the very, very flush.

Review Date: 1 Jul 1999

Price when reviewed: (£7,697 inc VAT)

Overall Rating
4 stars out of 6

Of course one main reason, other than speed and network manageability, for buying a laser over an inkjet is the cost per page. On this front, the 780 Plus is a little disappointing, working out at an above-average 9.4p per colour page at only five per cent coverage per colour, and 3p per monochrome page.

There's no doubting the Phaser 780 Plus' pedigree when it comes to sheer quality, but the real question is if it's worth the astronomic asking price of £6,551. At £1,472 more expensive than the faster but lower quality Lexmark Optra Color 1200N, we'd argue that it isn't. Only those desperate for the extra quality with a forgiving bank manager or an enormous IT budget need apply.
