Kyocera FS-6700

Verdict

A competent A3 mono laser printer with very good output quality and incredibly low operating costs. Base specification is a bit weak though, and you'll need to upgrade to achieve the claimed speed.

Review Date: 1 Dec 1998

Price when reviewed: (£1,456 inc VAT)

Overall Rating
4 stars out of 6

For quality, text was clean and sharp, and graphics were a dramatic improvement over Kyocera's 28ppm FS-7000 (reviewed issue 42, p163). Although horizontal banding was still in evidence, photographic images were far superior. The FS-6700 produced good levels of detail and subtle shading was handled well. The KIR2 option had the useful effect of improving contrast, but its claimed resolution improvement wasn't much in evidence.

Combine the price and the low operating costs and you have a fast A3 mono laser printer that initially looks good value. However, with such a low base specification, upgrades and optional extras are almost inevitable. Just 4Mb of memory isn't enough for a workgroup printer and it's about time a network card was included as standard.
