HP LaserJet 2100TN

Verdict

A printer with excellent specification and print quality at a low price. It's ideal for small workgroups or offices that need higher resolution and full network features as standard.

As regards network installation, the 2100TN performed equally well, with setup on a NetWare network taking 15 minutes. HP's JetAdmin utility searches for and displays any JetDirect cards it finds ready for configuration. Both NetWare bindery and NDS (Novell Directory Services) are supported, and you can also create user, queue and group objects and assign printing privileges directly from within JetAdmin. HP has dramatically improved management options over TCP/IP too. Whereas previously you had to use its WebJetAdmin utility, which could only be installed on Windows NT, OS/2 or HP-UX systems, you can now access the printer directly with a standard browser.

The 2100TN is in an extremely competitive area of the printer market, but thanks to its superb specification it manages to outshine the opposition. There really isn't anything else out there that can offer 1,200dpi resolution, 8Mb of memory, PCL6 and PostScript 2 emulations and full network capability at the same price.
