HP DeskJet 950C

Verdict

The DeskJet 950C is close in styling to the top-of-the-range 970Cxi, and even though it's a cheaper and less featured it still maintains the speed and good-quality printing.

Overall Rating
4 stars out of 6

A fine detail analysis, through examination of the train print-out, showed sharp straight lines and reasonably well-curved arcs, but jaggies were noted without the need for close scrutiny. The acid test was the 18Mb image of the frescoed interior of a church. Using HP Premium Plus Photo Paper the printed image was glossy and certainly had the feel of a photo print because of the thickness of the media.

A final comparison with our original test prints from the DeskJet 970Cxi shows the 950C to be much sharper in resolving image detail. However, this shouldn't be the case since the 970Cxi is the superior unit, so we suspect that the drivers and especially HP PhotoREt III weren't optimised for the 970Cxi when we first tested it. Ultimately, the DeskJet 950C is a fine inclusion to the HP line-up at a price that's within the reach of a wider community.
