Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 720C

Verdict

A capable personal printer at a great price, let down slightly by text quality on plain paper. Photographs are superb, but experiment with paper stock for best results.

Review Date: 1 Feb 1998

Price when reviewed: (£270 inc VAT)

Overall Rating
4 stars out of 6

Only the CorelDraw test showed a remaining weakness in the DeskJet 720C's 600dpi print engine: fine lines and black on white curves are not as smooth as on printers with resolutions of 1,200dpi or higher. Ultimately, if best possible text quality and fine line drawing are important, the Lexmark 7200 (reviewed issue 40, p168) is the better option.

HP's PhotoREt II technology is compelling. It's fast, produces great results and, in the form of the 720C, it's now available in a very affordable package. For smoothly-shaded business graphics and photographs, the 720C is an extremely good buy.
