ViewSonic VX922 review

The race for the lowest response-time monitor looks to have been won by ViewSonic. The VX922 is an update of the VX924, and boasts a remarkably quick response time of just 2ms, in both white-black-white and grey-to-grey.

The VX922 flew through our technical tests. The contrast ratio is quoted at 550:1, and in real-world use just the last two brightest steps of a 255-step greyscale were indistinguishable from the white background. At the other end of the scale the VX922 offered nearly indentical performance - just three dark grey patches were invisible against a pure black background.

This means that detail won't be lost in photographs, and subtle variations in tone should be visible. Any flaws you see are more likely to come from the source image than the monitor. In use the VX922 was, predictably, excellent for gaming and film watching - you just won't spot any smearing or trailing pixels.

But then you won't be able to spot any on the VX924 (see issue 130, p70) either. This has a 4ms response time, and is our current A List choice - partially because it costs £221 (£260 inc VAT).

The VX922 doesn't justify its price in terms of the features on offer, either. The stand doesn't pivot, and it's not height-adjustable. None of these features are present on the VX924, but then for £68 more we'd expect a few more bells and whistles.

As a piece of technology, the low response time of the VX922 makes it noteworthy. But as a piece of hardware it's poor value compared to its older, marginally slower brother.
