CTX PV722E review

While we weren't instantly impressed with the CTX's styling, our opinions changed when we began running our tests. With the exception of its vertical viewing angles, it passed every test easily, its several distinctions giving it the third-highest quality score behind the LG and Eizo.

The purity tests showed the panel to be bright and uniformly lit and, although others fell down in the colour combination tests, the CTX's ability to show cyan on green and magenta on red was one of the best we've seen. On the ramps, it excelled once more, producing a balanced tonal range in both colour and greyscale flavours. Banding was practically invisible in the colour ramps, but we managed to spot a couple of harsher transitions in the greyscale. Blending was also marred in the spectrum tests, where a slight banding tarnished either side of the blue and red areas. In the real-world tests, there were few problems, with both the game and DVD giving no cause for concern.

While its features score wasn't the highest, it still proves tempting with its 90-degree rotation feature and twin detachable speakers, which provide adequate if bass-less sound. Uniquely, there's also a four-port USB 2 hub tethered to the panel via a power cable.

At £34 cheaper than the LG, the PV722E makes a tempting choice, but the Flatron L1800PK's far superior stand, bezel and size make it worth the extra. Don't forget, though, that the ADi delivers almost the same quality for £58 less.
