Plus U2-1150

Plus ambitiously chose to rate the U2-1150 with an absolute contrast ratio of 800:1. While our measurements showed all other manufacturers' claims were within reasonable boundaries, the results for the Plus came in at 150:1 with consequently low-contrast grid ratios too (see Performance analysis, p78). We also found the Plus had the lowest brightness levels on test - 1,054 ANSI lumens against the claimed 1,500 - so we checked the lamp counter and were bemused to find that it claimed to be brand new, with just one hour recorded.

Thankfully, the brightness and contrast levels didn't affect image quality, and focusing and sharpness were near perfect. It was only in the keystone-corrected tests that some concerned eyebrows were raised, with the Plus failing all the tests.

We also found its auto-image setup to be unsatisfactory, with manual adjustment required to produce an acceptable image. Unfortunately, this was hindered by the poor response of the remote control's rubber keys and the relatively slow response of the basic OSD menu. This was despite infrared receivers on the front and back of the unit, as with most of the products on test.

On a more positive note, the Plus is well constructed, with obvious and smooth focus and zoom rings. Measuring only 235 x 58 x 297mm (W x H x D) and weighing just 2.6kg, its relative portability means it can be easily taken around the office or on the road. However, home entertainment fans shouldn't consider the Plus. Although it performed well when playing back DVDs, it was simply too noisy.
