Canon S820D review

Verdict

This is the best photo printer we've seen, combining fast print speeds with fantastic quality, borderless printing and standalone functionality. It can't beat Lexmark and HP on black text performance, but this is irrelevant if you want the best photo results.

Canon has a slight issue with its current printer line-up - its cheaper S series models offer superb text printing, but fall down on photos, while its high-end photo printers produce stunning photos, but fall down on everyday printing. None of its range currently offers the all-round versatility of HP's 990Cxi.

We recommend you go for an affordable mono laser or an inkjet like the Lexmark Z53 (see Reviews, issue 82, p158) for high-speed text printing. However, the real advantages of inkjets today are unrivalled colour and photo performance, and in this league the Canon S820D is the best by a long shot. It's fast, the quality is incredible and it offers an amazing array of functionality with its individual ink tank system, media reader and borderless printing. At £280, it's not cheap, but this is the price you pay for such a fantastic printer.
