A fully featured, superb performer that's built to last. Taken as a whole, the D1x is the finest digital SLR you can buy.

The D1x writes data to Type I or II CompactFlash cards and will also handle microdrives up to 1Gb. However, some formats require the latest version 1.1 firmware from Nikon in order to work. Direct transfer can take place through a FireWire connection, which proves its worth with the bigger file sizes. There's no USB socket, though, as Nikon doesn't see that as a relevant option on a professional camera. With FireWire and the optional Nikon Capture 2 software the D1x can also be controlled from a PC.

In use, you can choose from six white balance temperatures plus auto-assessment with the option to measure the white balance manually. The Digital Matrix Image Control algorithm helps here, while also optimising other settings such as colour accuracy.

During testing, using an AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm lens (£1,300), colour reproduction was excellent and general image quality was very high, especially at 125 to 400 ISO sensitivity. Combined with the Speedlight SB-28DX, on-camera flash has never been so good. There's even an RS-232C socket to take a GPS unit.

In short, the Nikon D1x is a phenomenal digital camera for the professional user. It offers a tremendous number of features and delivers stunning results. This performance doesn't come cheaply, but if you're prepared to stump up the cash then the D1x will thoroughly reward your investment.
