Linotype Jade 2

Verdict

Great-quality scanning accompanied by the best set of colour correction tools you'll find with a scanner at this price. Almost perfect - it's simply too noisy.

Review Date: 1 May 1998

Price when reviewed: (£469 inc VAT); transparency hood, £199 (£234 inc VAT)

Overall Rating
5 stars out of 6

For all the Jade 2's accomplishments, however, the one thing I was wishing for by the time I'd finished testing was a volume control. During scanning, the Jade 2 emitted a loud, grinding noise that drove myself, and several colleagues, up the wall. If you're going to be doing a lot of scanning in an open-plan office, for example, this scanner is simply too noisy.

It's a great shame that something as simple as an annoying noise can undermine a sophisticated product. At £399, the Jade 2 offers high-quality scanning and a set of colour tools unrivalled by any scanner in its price range, but you should only consider buying it if you think you can put up with the highly annoying side effects.
