Fuji FinePix 6800 review

Verdict

Great styling and Super CCD can't make up for its shortcomings and as such it isn't quite a match for the Camedia C-3040Zoom.

The camera is supplied with a cradle that connects to a computer via a USB lead in a similar way to a PDA. As soon as it's slipped into the cradle, the software is launched. This is easy to use and allows quick operation, making the FinePix 6800 a pleasure rather than a pain to use.

In terms of performance, the FinePix 6800 proved interesting. Viewing images at high zoom in a photo editor leaves no doubt that more detail is recorded with this Super CCD camera than with a non-Super CCD model. So, if big pictures are your forte, this is a seriously capable machine.

Its not all plain sailing, though, and the jury is out when it comes to the FinePix 6800's colour reproduction. Fuji film is renowned for its highly saturated colours and it seems that the company's digital cameras are following a similar route. For example, the FinePix 6800 produces prominent, bright-looking reds and greens. This means that on a day with flat lighting, there'll be a nice 'lift' to the results.

The Fuji FinePix 6800 is a good camera, and its Super CCD has a higher resolution than a camera using a conventional design. However, it's debatable whether you need the extra resolution for the types of application that the FinePix 6800 is suited to. The camera has its flaws too: the colours are unnatural, the lack of TIFF recording is an omission, and at this price I'd expect a few more features. At the end of the day, the Olympus Camedia C-3040Zoom is better featured, has a good resolution and more natural colours, plus the option to use AA cells if desired or in an emergency. It therefore retains its A List standing.
