QMS 2060 Executive review

Verdict

A powerful printer with fast A4 and A3 print speeds, high resolution and excellent print quality, let down by poor NetWare support. The installation routine is difficult and the management software badly written.

To cut a long story short, I used a local parallel port link to run the printer tests after failing to get the Executive working with NetWare. CrownAdmin offers no automatic NetWare installation routine, it crashes regularly and doesn't even have full support for NDS (NetWare Directory Services). This is the second time I've locked horns with the CrownAdmin software, and I only got it working the first time after a number of calls to QMS's technical support in The Netherlands. QMS should take a look at the MarkVision and JetAdmin utilities from Lexmark and Hewlett-Packard if it wants to see how to do it properly.

The hardware specification, print quality and speed of the 2060 Executive is impressive, but the installation procedures and administration software need an awful lot of work. Although Microsoft is carving large chunks out of it, the target market of small to medium-sized workgroups is still mainly NetWare-based, and QMS doesn't offer a package sophisticated enough to make the Executive the best choice.
