Canon Multipass L60 review

Verdict

As is often the case with multifunction devices, the L60 is a compromise, particularly where the scanning and print engines are concerned. It's a capable device overall, but the price is too high.

On the software side, the CD supplied installs both printer and fax drivers, enabling you to fax documents straight from the Print menu of any application by selecting the appropriate driver. This produces the standard Microsoft Fax window: just type in the phone number and away it goes.

Given the basic nature of the scanning engine, which is eight-bit greyscale at 600ppi, the scanner is really only suitable for document archiving and OCR. The supplied MultiPASS Desktop Manager application handles this sort of task very neatly, allowing the efficient scanning and storing of multiple documents. A clever touch is the fact that when performing a scan or copy job the L60 beeps to signify it has finished - one-up on most standalone copiers or scanners. There again, this is just as well, as scanning 25 pages at 300ppi for OCR takes over ten minutes.

The MultiPASS L60 will no doubt find a place in many offices, and in everyday use its deficiencies will go largely unnoticed. But with the price as high as it is, I'd hesitate to recommend it if one of its functions is already covered by an existing piece of equipment.
