Casio Cassiopeia EM500

Verdict

A stylish, speedy Pocket PC with impressive video playback capabilities. Sadly, a lack of RAM and the use of MMCs for expansion will put off many people.

Despite pitching this device as a multimedia powerhouse, Casio only supplies it with 16Mb of RAM as standard. This can be upgraded with stamp-sized MMCs (MultiMedia Cards) through the slot at the top, but even the decision to go with MMC has negative ramifications. Most importantly, users are denied access to the existing library of CompactFlash format products, including the 1Gb IBM microdrive and other peripheral devices such as a modem. If you want Internet connectivity you're going to have to use Casio's own serial-connected modem device or the bundled MTDS GSM software modem. To its credit, the latter item supports many common Nokia, Siemens and Ericsson phones through infrared or an optional cable.

Another problem for serious mobile users is battery life. Six to eight hours is about standard for a Pocket PC, but if you're away from a charger for long periods, that lithium ion battery won't last the distance. Unlike older Palms and Handspring Visors, you can't just sling in a new set of AAs when the old ones run out.

If you can live with the battery life, the lack of RAM and you don't need CompactFlash, then this is still a very usable, not to mention likeable, palmtop PC. The major problem is that many of us would still rather plump for the Compaq iPAQ as a palmtop partner - it looks more grown-up and has a more serious, corporate feel. The EM500 might point the way towards a more exciting, entertaining mobile future, but for the moment it's second or third choice in the palmtop PC stakes.
