HP Jornada 928 WDA review

Verdict

Cheaper than O2's xda, but the screen and construction are inferior and it's marginally slower. However, HP's design and choice of applications make it a more versatile device.

The 928 does score over the xda with its bundled software applications. The list of provisions is too long to go into, but the most interesting services supplied revolve around using the GPRS connection. Obviously, you can browse the Internet using the Pocket version of Mobile Explorer and we had no problems with connection or performance over GPRS. EatOut is supplied courtesy of Vodafone's Vizzavi service, which allows you to find and book restaurants using GPRS-localised information. And, when you're not connected, there are HP scripted applications including Task Switcher, Image Viewer and Display Profile. Finally, a CD full of extra software is supplied, including a trial version of an anti-virus package from F-Secure, which may be worth investigating if you're planning to frequently connect to the Internet.

The Vodafone contract price of £332 seems tempting when compared to O2's price of £425 for the xda. The 928 can also be bought contract-free, although this will require you to manually set up connections, which may put off many prospective users. HP's Jornada 928 WDA is versatile, well priced and offers a broad range of bundled applications, but ultimately the xda's exemplary construction, brighter display and better performance and usability win out.
