Powerline networking has been around for some time, and is a boon for anyone for whom wireless networking is unreliable or unworkable. But only recently have manufacturers started producing products that offer cross-compatibility and speeds high enough to stream high-definition video.

Devices adhering to the HomePlug AV standard promise theoretical speeds of up to 200Mbits/sec and the certification scheme means products from different firms should work together. So, after a rash of new announcements, we decided it was time to put a few pairs through their paces.
